The Blue Garden

Reviving a horticultural treasure

The Blue Garden is a historic private garden in Newport, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. and recently restored by horticultural preservationists to the specifications of Olmsted’s original plans.

  • Identity
  • Web

The organization asked Vervaine to design a website to document the story behind the restoration, and provide a virtual experience of the garden and its historic significance.

The garden’s form and colors inspired our design approach. To simulate the visitor’s experience of the grounds, we combined modern and historic photography to capture the garden’s classical lines from key vantage points. The website features an introductory video as well as an interactive planting plan with a continually updated index of current flora.

The website serves as a cultural and educational resource that supports The Blue Garden’s mission to inspire and teach. We also designed a distinctive logo, a recognizable identity that elevates the organization’s profile on its website, letterhead, and communications materials.
